Kirk Venge's Sonoma side. The Calistoga winemaker crossed the mountain in 2012 to chase Russian River Pinot and Chardonnay, and Narrow Gauge is his appellation blend, drawing from sites like Ritchie, Bacigalupi and Dutton Ranch's Morelli Lane. Native fermentations, 14 months in French oak. The name honors the narrow gauge railroad that opened Sonoma County to small farmers in the 1870s. Fuller styled but fresh. Wine Enthusiast gave the 2022 93 points.

Raw honey, marmalade, citrus zest, toasted pine nuts and flinty stone on the nose. Ripe pineapple, apple, stone fruit and crisp pear on a full but mouthwatering palate.

Butter-basted halibut, Dungeness crab, or roast chicken with pan drippings.

Croix Estate sits on the former Robert Rue property on Wood Road, which Kirk Venge bought in 2016. He founded Croix in 2012 to make single-vineyard Russian River Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Croix means cross, for his crossing from Napa to Sonoma.
