Ric Forman made Sterling's first wines, helped design Newton, and has run his own St. Helena estate since 1983. His Chardonnay comes from vines he owns on the Rutherford Bench and never goes through malolactic. Whole-cluster pressed, fermented in Burgundy barrels, raised on the lees. It drinks closer to Chablis than to buttery Napa. The 2023 is bright, stony and built to age. One of Napa's last true classicists, and at $68.99 you are under his usual tariff.
Meyer lemon, green apple and white peach over hazelnut and wet stone. Vibrant, precisely textured palate, crystalline acidity, subtle oak spice, long mineral-driven finish.
Classic matches for Chardonnay: Roast chicken, lobster or crab with butter, corn dishes, soft creamy cheeses.
Forman made Sterling Vineyards' first wines, partnered with Peter Newton to build Newton Vineyard, then founded Forman Vineyard in 1983. The Chardonnay comes off the Rutherford Bench (Star Vineyard in recent vintages), whole-cluster pressed, barrel fermented on gross lees, with malolactic conversion blocked. Chablis is the stated model.
