Landhaus Mayer Gruner Veltiner 2024 750ml
$25.00
Landhaus Mayer is the country cousin of Mayer am Pfarrplatz, the Vienna house making wine since 1683, with production overseen by Gerhard J. Lobner. The Gruner Veltliner comes from partner growers across Lower Austria, part of a deliberate effort to keep prime vineyards from being abandoned. The 2024 is textbook Gruner: white pepper, grapefruit, herbs, snap, 12.5% alcohol. Falstaff gave it 89 points. Drink it young and cold, within a year or two, with almost anything on the table.
White pepper and grapefruit lead, honeyed pear and lemon behind. Light bodied and dry with lively acidity, fine herbal spiciness, a tinge of creaminess and a fresh, snappy finish.
Wiener schnitzel, sushi night, asparagus with hollandaise, or cold roast chicken from the fridge.
Grapes come from selected sites in Niederosterreich, where the river-shaped topography and climate favor Gruner. Lobner and the growers decide vineyard work together, keeping endangered plots in production as older farmers retire.
