Massican is Dan Petroski's whites-only California label, built on his love of northern Italy's alpine whites, and it has made him a winemaker of the year more than once. This Sauvignon Blanc chases the high-toned style of the Dolomites, not New Zealand. You get the passionfruit and cut grass, sure, but with a chalky mineral middle and a saline finish that pulls you straight back to the glass. Decanter and James Suckling both scored the 2023 a 94. Drink it young and cold.
Palest green-gold. Passionfruit, green apple, cut grass, lemon verbena. Silky yet snappy, with kiwi, Meyer lemon, and chalky minerals, bright acidity, and a faint salinity that makes the mouth water.
Raw bar anything, snap peas with mint, grilled branzino, goat cheese salad.
Dan Petroski founded Massican as a white-wine-only label modeled on the high-toned, mineral whites of northeastern Italy. He was named San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year and VinePair's 2024 Next Wave Winemaker of the Year.
