Napa Riesling is rare. Napa Riesling from a Cabernet house is rarer still, and Palmaz makes one of the best. The Louise Riesling is a limited-production wine fermented almost fully dry with no barrel aging, keeping the alcohol low and the acidity high so it lands between sweet, fruity and dry. The 2020 leads with tangerine that deepens into honey and beeswax. Aperitif, first course or spicy takeout night. It covers all three without breaking stride.

Tangerine aromas morph into deeper honey and beeswax. Supple body, vibrant acidity and an elegant texture, finishing crisp, refreshing and nearly dry.

Hors d'oeuvres, a delicate first course, or a lighter main. We reach for it when the food brings heat.

The Palmaz estate sits near Mt. George in eastern Coombsville, one of Napa's cooler corners thanks to San Pablo Bay fog. The Louise Riesling is deliberately made crisp: near-dry fermentation, zero oak.
