Valravn Chardonnay - 2023

Valravn's Chardonnay pulls from Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast vineyards, where foggy mornings hold the acid and sunny afternoons ripen the fruit. Wild yeast fermentation in barrel and stainless, full malolactic, ten months in French oak with monthly lees stirring, only 20 to 30 percent of the wood new. The result is the middle path Chardonnay drinkers keep asking for: ripe apple and melon richness over a stony, briny backbone. 13.5 percent. Weeknight-priced, weekend-good.

Meyer lemon, quince, green apple, ripe melon. Full-bodied but fresh, stony and floral with a briny edge, subtle mint and citrus, a kiss of toasted oak, mineral-salt finish.

Crab cakes, roast chicken with lemon, lobster rolls, corn chowder in late summer.

Fruit comes from Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast sites. Wild yeast fermentation in barrel and stainless steel, full malolactic conversion, ten months in French oak at 20 to 30 percent new, with monthly lees stirring.
