Venge Brown Vineyard Chardonnay

Kirk Venge's Carneros Chardonnay. Brown Ranch is a 30-acre site on Old Sonoma Road next door to Hyde Vineyard, owned and farmed by the Renteria family since 2012, and this is 100 percent Dijon clone 76 Chardonnay from its hillside alluvial soils. Whole cluster pressed, native fermented in neutral French oak, aged on the lees, bottled unfiltered. Around 300 cases. Fresh and stylish Napa Chardonnay, not a butter bomb.

Fresh orange citrus, toasted pine nuts, allspice and flint on the nose. Crisp pineapple, apple, stone fruit and ripe pear, satiny texture, mouthwatering finish.

Seared scallops, roast chicken with tarragon, or a wedge of triple-cream brie.

Brown Ranch was a cattle ranch named for former owner Nadine Brown and later supplied Saintsbury. After Eutypa disease hit the old vines, the Renterias cut trunks to the ground and retrained new vines on the surviving rootstock. Venge's home estate is on the Silverado Trail in Calistoga.
