Villa Maria - ‘Keltern’ - Chardonnay - 2021

Keltern is Villa Maria's great Chardonnay site: an ancient riverbed vineyard planted in 1999 on the western edge of Hawke's Bay's Bridge Pa Triangle, silt loams over red metal gravels. The fruit is wild-yeast fermented and aged on lees in French oak barriques. With this 2021, the wine was promoted into the winery's top Icon tier, and it earns the spot. Tense, flinty, powerful Chardonnay with white Burgundy manners at a New Zealand price.
Ripe melon, citrus blossom, nougat and grilled nuts with flint and lemon zest. Mouthfilling attack, then a long line of natural acidity into a sustained, mineral finish.
Crab cakes, roast chicken with tarragon, scallops in brown butter.
The Keltern Vineyard lies east of Maraekakaho near the Ngaruroro River in Hawke's Bay. Winemaking runs wild-yeast fermentation in French barriques, partial malolactic, and roughly 11 months on lees with bâtonnage.
