Alto Limay - Chardonnay - 2021
$19.00
Alto Limay is a Patagonia project born from a partnership between Paul Hobbs Imports and Familia Schroeder, whose winemaking history in the region goes back to a German immigrant who settled there in 1927. His son relaunched the estate in 2001, turning arid Patagonian steppe into vineyard in San Patricio del Chañar, Neuquén. It's a serious answer to the question of what Chardonnay tastes like this far south, cool-climate and mineral-driven rather than broad and buttery.
Greenish-yellow color with apple, lemon, pineapple and honey on the nose, plus vanilla from the oak. White fruit and orange blossom carry through on a palate with bright, balanced acidity.
Classic matches for Chardonnay: Roast chicken, lobster or crab with butter, corn dishes, soft creamy cheeses.
Vineyards sit in San Patricio del Chañar, Neuquén, where the Limay and Neuquén rivers meet to form the Río Negro. Sandy, silty soils over limestone bedrock, constant wind and a short growing season keep yields naturally low and acidity high.
