Bodegas Alvarez y Diez has made wine in Rueda since 1941, one of the oldest houses in the region, and was among the first to pioneer the crisp, herbaceous modern style Rueda is known for today. Mantel Blanco Sauvignon Blanc comes off 100 hectares of estate vineyard, cold-soaked and fermented in stainless steel to lock in freshness. At $19 it's a reliable, zippy Spanish white for anyone who wants Sauvignon Blanc character with more texture than the standard New Zealand version.

Pale straw color; aromas of honeydew melon and sliced ginger; palate of peach, apricot, sage leaf and ginger, cut by bold acidity. Rated 88 points by Wine Enthusiast.

Founded in 1941 by Modesto Alvarez Romero and Eladio Diez Ossorio, Alvarez y Diez farms 100 hectares of its own sustainably managed vineyards in Rueda. The winery still uses an old underground cellar that once belonged to the Church for barrel storage, and ferments in stainless steel with cold soaks to preserve bright, zingy flavors.
