Simon Waghorn started Astrolabe in 1996 after years making wine for other Marlborough producers, naming it for the ship L'Astrolabe, which charted this coast in 1827. His daughters Libby and Arabella now work alongside him, sourcing across Awatere Valley, Wairau Valley and the Kekerengu Coast, three distinct sub-regions blended into one bottle. The 2022 landed at No. 15 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of the Year. Bone dry, crisp and layered rather than one-note. This is the bottle for people who think all Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc tastes the same.

Gooseberry, green pepper and fresh-cut grass over passionfruit and guava, with lime zest, grapefruit and a chalky texture through the crisp, dry finish.

Classic matches for Sauvignon Blanc: Goat cheese, oysters, green salads, anything with fresh herbs.

Founded in 1996 by winemaker Simon Waghorn, whose microbiology background shapes his approach to fermentation. Now a two-generation family operation with daughters Libby and Arabella involved. Fruit is drawn from Marlborough's Awatere Valley, Wairau Valley and Kekerengu Coast sub-regions, each contributing distinct character to the blend.
