Barrel Oak Reserve Petit Verdot - 2021 750ml

Barrel Oak sits one county over in Delaplane, 30 acres of vines planted since 2006 in the Blue Ridge foothills. Petit Verdot is Virginia's power grape, and this is the winery's reserve take: two years in barrel, 70% French and 30% American oak, before blending and bottling. Second-generation Virginia winemaker Jeremy Ligon has run the cellar since 2021. Dark, grippy, unmistakably local. Pour it for anyone who still doubts Virginia red.

Plum, blackberry and licorice up front, opening with air to leather and rich Virginia tobacco. Dark, grippy structure from two years in barrel. Decant it young.

Lamb chops, venison, brisket. Anything off the smoker holds its own here.

Planted since 2006, Barrel Oak's 30-acre vineyard grows ten varieties including Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Norton. Kavelle and Ken Bajaj of Upperville took stewardship in 2022. Wine Enthusiast once named it the most family-friendly winery in the world.
