Rome has its own wine appellation, and this is the bottle that proves the point. Poggio le Volpi blends Montepulciano, Cesanese and Syrah from hilly vineyards around the capital — volcanic, pozzolanic soils, open to sea winds off the coast. Deep, smooth and quietly serious, with more swagger than the price tag warns you about. The red to open when the table is loud and the sauce is red.

Deep ruby, with morello cherry, violets, blackberry and a balsamic note that keeps all that ripeness in line. Smooth and pleasantly tannic, with mineral grip and a long, persistent finish.

Lasagna night was invented for this. Red-sauce anything, pizza from a real oven, hard salty cheeses.

The vineyards sit on volcanic, pozzolanic and sandy soils in hilly sites across the Roma DOC, open to sea winds off the coast, which is where the mineral grip comes from.
