Alphonse Mellot Sancerre "La Moussiere" 2024
$80.00
The Mellot family has made wine in Sancerre since 1513 and the firstborn son takes the name Alphonse. Nineteen generations in, La Moussiere is still the flagship. Sauvignon Blanc off south-facing Kimmeridgian soils, farmed biodynamically since 1999, fermented in a split of vats and barrels for texture. The 2024 is fresh and precise, all lemon and stone. Benchmark Sancerre from the appellation's first family. Bring oysters. Or don't, it will not care.
White flowers, lemon, nettle and citrus zest with a bready hint. Silky minerality, finely textured palate, fresh mineral acidity, energy and density through a clean finish.
Oysters on the half shell, goat cheese salad with Crottin de Chavignol, grilled trout.
La Moussiere is the family's home vineyard below the town of Sancerre, roughly 30 hectares in one piece on Kimmeridgian limestone and marl. Every Mellot site has been farmed biodynamically since 1999, rare work for the region. Louis XIV took a Mellot as his wine advisor.
