Bonfante & Chiarle - 'Rastrellino' - Gavi di Gavi - 2022

Bonfante & Chiarle has been making wine in Mombaruzzo, in Piedmont's Monferrato hills, since 1908, run today by the Chiarle and Bonfante families with young winemaker Massimo pushing the style toward something more elegant. Rastrellino is their Gavi di Gavi bottling, Cortese grown on the slopes around the town of Gavi and on vineyards south of Alessandria, on chalky, clay-rich soil. It's fermented in temperature-controlled steel tanks, the traditional method for the appellation. A characterful, structured take on Gavi, drier and more sinewy than the soft, generic version most people know.

Fresh, intensive fruit on the nose, dry and fine on the palate with a sinewy, structured backbone rather than the soft, round style some Gavi leans into. Clean, mineral finish.

Bonfante & Chiarle draws Cortese for Rastrellino from vineyards on the slopes around the comune of Gavi itself and from sites south of Alessandria, on chalky, clay soils typical of the appellation's best ground. Fermentation runs in temperature-controlled stainless steel, the traditional Gavi method.
