George and Nancy Bravante founded their Howell Mountain estate in 1996 and built the winery on the mountain in 2005, and this Cabernet is the reason you make the climb. High-elevation volcanic soils give the 2018 the classic Howell Mountain trade: blueberry and cassis density with tannins that stay fine instead of brutish. Bravante also holds wines back in barrel and bottle until they are ready, so this drinks like someone else's library release. Pour it tonight.

Blueberry, cassis and black cherry threaded with dried herbs, dusty sage and mocha-laced oak. Ripe, integrated tannins, real energy through the mid-palate, a succulent and refreshing finish.

The Bravante family farms estate vineyards atop Howell Mountain, above the fog line east of St. Helena, and built their winery there in 2005. House style favors patience: extended barrel aging, then bottle age, so wines release at what they call the start of the perfection plateau.
