Howell Mountain grows a particular kind of Cabernet, dense but never heavy, and Bravante's 2018 is a textbook example. George and Nancy Bravante established the estate in 1996 and finished their mountain winery in 2005. Volcanic soils above the fog line pack blueberry and cassis into the wine while the tannins stay polished. The family ages everything longer than most, in barrel and then in bottle, which means this arrives ready to pour with dinner tonight.

Cassis, blueberry and black cherry with dusty sage, dried currant and a mocha note from oak. Tannins ripe and woven in, an energetic palate, and a fine, refreshing close.

Classic matches for Cabernet Sauvignon: Ribeye off the grill, lamb chops, aged cheddar, a rainy night and a good movie.

Estate vineyards sit atop Howell Mountain above the fog line east of St. Helena, farmed by the Bravante family since 1996 with their winery completed in 2005. They hold wines in barrel and bottle until ready, releasing at the start of the drinking window.
