Carlos Serres Reserva 2019
$25.99
Carlos Serres has been making wine in Haro since 1896, one of only a handful of Rioja bodegas that never changed hands. The founder, a French négociant fleeing phylloxera, helped build Rioja's export trade from scratch and pushed for the syndicate that became today's DOCa. This Reserva is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, all off the winery's own 60-hectare Finca El Estanque, aged 24 months in American and French oak and another year in bottle before release. Classic, old-school Rioja that earns its label.
Cherry red with a brick edge from the extra age. Rose petal, red plum, baking spice and cedar on the nose; black cherry, cinnamon, clove and vanilla carry through a long, balsamic-tinged finish.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
All the fruit comes from Finca El Estanque, the winery's own 60-hectare vineyard in Rioja Alta's best terroir around Haro. Carlos Serres founded the bodega in 1896 and helped found the Rioja Wine Exporters Syndicate in 1907, the forerunner of today's regulatory board.
