Cascina Del Colle - Negus - Montepulciano D'Abruzzo - 2017
$79.00
The D'Onofrio family's top Montepulciano. Cascina del Colle farms around Villamagna in Abruzzo's Chieti hills, country that has grown Montepulciano for centuries, with vines at about 250 meters facing south and southeast. Negus macerates on its skins for up to 20 days, then spends 18 to 24 months in barrique. The 2017 is a big, warm 15.5 percent red with real structure. Drinks like a far more famous bottle. The sleeper Italian on the shelf.
Blackberry jam, ripe cherry, cocoa and black licorice with clove, tobacco and leather. Full-bodied, firm tannic grip, fresh acidity, warm vanilla and cinnamon through a long, persistent finish.
Lamb ragu over pappardelle, grilled sausages, or a chunk of aged pecorino.
Cascina del Colle is the D'Onofrio family's estate in Villamagna, a commune east of Chieti with a centuries-old Montepulciano tradition. Vineyards sit at roughly 250 to 280 meters with south and southeast exposure, swinging between hard winters and hot summers.
