Cass Vineyards - Mourvèdre - 2021
$39.99
Cass farms 145 acres in the warm Geneseo District east of Paso Robles, planted in 2000 as one of the first California vineyards set entirely to ENTAV-certified French clones. Steve Cass and Ted Plemons opened the winery in 2005 and every bottle is 100% estate fruit. Mourvedre usually plays backup in GSM blends. Here it takes the lead, and the 2021 makes the case: deep purple, smooth and creamy, dark plum and sandalwood with polish to spare.
Dark plum, cherry, cedar, vanilla, and sandalwood on the nose. Smooth, creamy palate with buoyant acidity, polished tannin, mocha, toffee, and a pink peppercorn edge.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
The estate grows eleven varieties and produces about 10,000 cases a year, all from its own fruit. Warm Geneseo days and cool coastal breezes stretch the ripening season.
