Château des Capitans is one of the most famous estates in Juliénas, a Beaujolais cru, and it is a Georges Duboeuf family property. The 2019 is 100 percent Gamay and drinks darker than Beaujolais's reputation suggests, all black fruit, spice, and real tannin. Decanter reviewed it and praised its richness and class. Cru Beaujolais at this level shames plenty of Pinot at twice the money. Twenty minutes in the fridge, then pour with dinner.
Brilliant garnet. Blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry with white pepper and a whiff of oak. Ripe, nearly jammy fruit over rich tannins. Rounded, classy, persistent finish.
Coq au vin, roast pork shoulder, anything with mushrooms, or a good burger with gruyere.
The château and its Gamay vines sit in the heart of Juliénas, one of the ten Beaujolais crus, at the granite northern end of the region. It ranks among the appellation's best-known estates and is farmed under the Duboeuf family's stewardship.
