Chateau La Mothe du Barry - Le Barry - Bordeaux Superieur - 2020

Joel Duffau farms Chateau La Mothe du Barry in Moulon, on limestone-clay slopes near the Dordogne in the Entre-Deux-Mers zone. Le Barry is his old-vine cuvee: 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon from 40-year-old vines, vinified gently by four-week infusion with no sulfur during fermentation, then aged in once-used oak barrels. A serious little Bordeaux Superieur that drinks above its rank. Cellar it a few years or open it tonight with something off the grill.
Deep black-cherry purple. Kirsch, blackberry and sweet spice on the nose. Fleshy and powerful in youth, rich ripe tannin, dark fruit through the middle. Turns velvety with cellar time.
Lamb chops, game birds, a proper ribeye, roast chicken with herbs.
Family estate in Moulon run by Joel Duffau. Limestone-clay slopes, 40-year-old vines, low yields. Pump-overs the first two days only, then infusion for four weeks, no sulfur during vinification, 8 to 24 months in one-wine oak barrels.
