Chateau La Nerthe - Cuvee des Cadette - Chateauneuf-du-Pape - 2008

Cuvée des Cadettes is not a cellar selection. It comes from one 20-acre parcel of 85-to-100-year-old vines at Château La Nerthe, the first Châteauneuf plot replanted after phylloxera, and it is only made in years the estate judges worthy. The blend runs roughly equal parts Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged twelve months in small French oak barrels. This 2008 now carries nearly two decades of bottle age. A rare, mature Châteauneuf for the collector or the anniversary table.
Black cherry liqueur, toast, strawberry and balsamic on the nose. Rich, dense and concentrated on the palate, with sandalwood, cedar and cherry blossom, closing on a spiced finish.

La Nerthe is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's oldest estates, and Les Cadettes is its oldest parcel, on sandy-clay soils that give unusually fine tannins. Malolactic happens in concrete, aging in barrel, with the final blend assembled just before bottling.
