Chris Hamilton Cellars is a boutique Napa label from Texas entrepreneur Chris Hamilton and his wife Heidi, who landed coveted Napa Wine Company fruit from organically and dry-farmed vineyards around Yountville and Oakville. This is their Yountville Merlot from the strong 2021 vintage: plush, dark and unmistakably Napa in build. Small production with serious sourcing, and a reminder that Merlot from good dirt is the valley's quiet bargain next to $100 Cabernet.

Sun-ripe cherry, blackberry and lilac wrapped in dark chocolate, cedar and licorice. Silky, creamy texture, well-knit tannins, mocha and tilled earth on a long finish.

Filet with mushroom pan sauce, duck ragù, a short-rib grilled cheese if nobody's watching.

The Hamiltons first visited Napa in 2009 and launched the label after Napa Wine Company's Andy Hoxsey, whose family has farmed the valley for over a century, opened a grape contract to them. Fruit comes from organically farmed, dry-farmed Yountville and Oakville vineyards.
