Collateral grew out of Napa's D. R. Stephens Estate, founded by Justin Stephens with veteran winemaker Mike Hirby, and the house rule is draconian: only the finest barrels from the best blocks get bottled. The Pinot Noir comes from Silver Eagle Vineyard at the far western edge of Green Valley on the Sonoma Coast, all Pommard clone in clay-and-iron soil, cooled by ocean air but spared the fog. Production runs barely over a hundred cases. A members-list Pinot that made it to our shelf.

Freshly aromatic red cherry and raspberry with subtle spice. Texturally elegant, medium-bodied, with intense flavor from thick-skinned Pommard fruit, fine structure and a pure, precise finish.

Silver Eagle Vineyard sits at the western edge of the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Sonoma Coast. Pommard-clone Pinot thrives in its clay-and-iron soil, and Collateral credits the site's fastidious farming for the wine's purity. Aging is in French Burgundy barrels, roughly a third new.
