Gran Selezione is Chianti Classico's top tier, estate fruit only, and Colombaio di Cencio makes theirs from 100 percent Sangiovese grown at Cornia in Gaiole, between 280 and 480 meters. Stony limestone over sandstone keeps yields honest and stretches the season. Three years in large casks, a small share in barrique. The 2017 arrives with bottle age already working for it. Big-name Gran Selezione money buys half this much wine.

Deep ruby. Ripe red fruit and plum with vanilla and spice. Enveloping, elegant entry, lively balance, sweet silky tannins, long persistent finish. 14 percent.

The estate sits at Cornia in Gaiole in Chianti, vineyards from 280 to 480 meters on a south and southwest amphitheater cooled by wind. Hand-picked Sangiovese ferments in steel with 15 to 20 days on skins, then ages 36 months in large wood with a small portion in barrique.
