Cortarella Sodale Merlot Lazio 2021

Sodale is Famiglia Cotarella's second Merlot, drawn from the same 15-hectare vineyard in Castiglione in Teverina that produces Montiano, their flagship. The Cotarella brothers, Riccardo and Renzo, are two of Italy's most famous enologists, and Lazio is their home turf. The 2021 is 100% Merlot, fermented in steel, then aged nine months in barrique. Dark chocolate, licorice, and porcini depth with juicy power underneath. Baby Montiano at a fraction of the flagship's price.

Intense ruby with violet reflections. Licorice, dark chocolate, cardamom, and porcini mushroom on the nose. Powerful, juicy palate, well-mannered tannins, and a persistent finish.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

Grapes come from 15 hectares at 300 meters in Castiglione in Teverina, the same vineyards as flagship Montiano. Steel fermentation with pump-overs and delestage, then nine months of barrique aging.
