Old vines, storied dirt. Croix Estate makes this Zinfandel from Monte Rosso Vineyard, planted in 1886 at 1,300 feet in the Moon Mountain District, where some of the original Zinfandel vines still bear fruit. Native yeast fermentation, a five-day cold soak, then 16 months in 75% new French oak. Six barrels made. Big, exotic, unapologetically ripe, and the volcanic red soil keeps the acidity fresh underneath it all. For the Zin lover ready to graduate from the supermarket stuff.

Baked raspberries, prunes, orange rind and sweet fruitcake with wafts of Chinese five spice and underbrush. Big, rich and exotic, with spicy black fruit preserves, fig jam and dried currants. Long, chewy finish.
