Croix - Old Vine Zinfandel - 2021

Croix is Kirk Venge's Russian River Valley estate, and this Zinfandel comes off vines planted in 1904, when the site went in as a 39-acre field of Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, Petite Sirah and Mataro. Venge bought his 10-acre piece of it in 2016: dry-farmed sandy loam on Laguna Ridge, roughly 90% Zinfandel interplanted with old Alicante Bouschet. Century-old vines set tiny crops and the concentration shows. This is what old-vine Zin means when the words are true.
Boysenberry, blueberry, black cherry and lavender aromatics, then blackberry, white pepper, star anise and sweet herbs on a full, plush palate. Long, viscous finish. Drinks now, holds five to eight years.

The vineyard was planted near Forestville in 1904 and split into three parcels in 1973. Kirk Venge bought the old Robert Rue section in 2016 and made it Croix Estate: dry-farmed, low-fertility sandy loam on Laguna Ridge, cooled by morning fog off the Laguna de Santa Rosa.
