Diatom - Santa Barbara - Chardonnay - 2022
$28.99
Greg Brewer, also behind Brewer-Clifton and years at Melville, founded Diatom in 2005 around one idea: subtraction. No oak barrels, no malolactic fermentation, no extended aging, just Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County left as transparent as possible. The 2022 landed at No. 37 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2023 and picked up 92-93 points across Vinous and Wine Enthusiast. Lemon, sea spray and stone fruit come through with real precision. This is Chardonnay for people who think they don't like Chardonnay.
Lemon, citrus blossom and wet sand on the nose, with saline minerality and white peach on the palate. Tense, lively acidity and a long, mouthwatering finish.
Classic matches for Chardonnay: Roast chicken, lobster or crab with butter, corn dishes, soft creamy cheeses.
Winemaker Greg Brewer founded Diatom in 2005, naming it for the diatomaceous earth found throughout Santa Barbara County. The project is built entirely around restraint: no oak, no malolactic fermentation, no extended aging, just fruit and clarity.
