Village Volnay from a family cellar in the middle of Beaune. The Cauvards have farmed here for three generations, and Julien Cauvard now runs 18 hectares of nothing but Pinot Noir and Chardonnay spread across Beaune, Volnay, Pommard, Aloxe-Corton and Chorey. Volnay is the appellation for silk over muscle, and this 2020 plays it straight. Fine, perfumed, quietly serious red Burgundy. Under seventy dollars for the real thing is getting rare.
Black cherry and violets on the nose. Silky, almost creamy palate with fine tannin and delicate red fruit. Finishes clean and perfumed.
Classic matches for Pinot Noir: Salmon, roast duck, mushroom risotto, a charcuterie board that means business.
