Eight at the Gate Shiraz 2019

$32.00

Eight at the Gate is two sisters, Jane Richards and Claire Davies, farming the Lanacoona Estate in Wrattonbully on South Australia's Limestone Coast, with ex-Wynns Coonawarra chief Peter Douglas making the wines. The name counts their eight combined kids, usually hanging off a farm gate. This 2019 Shiraz spent 34 months in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads. Dense, focused, and built for a decade in the cellar. Serious Australian Shiraz from Coonawarra's quieter neighbor, not a fruit bomb.

Opaque magenta. Black fruits, cassis, chocolate, dry herbs, leather, bay leaf, and mulberry. Saturated yet balanced palate with great focus, fine tannins, and a long, lingering finish.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

Lanacoona Estate sits in Wrattonbully on the Limestone Coast. In 2019, heavy winter rain filled the soil profile, then a bone-dry summer with mild days and cool nights locked in strong varietal character and crisp natural acidity.
