Elias Mora - Descarte - Tempranillo - 2017
$64.99
Toro with the brakes on. Victoria Benavides farms 40-year-old Tinta de Toro on north-facing slopes at 700 meters, picking for freshness instead of raisins. Descarte gets a cold soak, malolactic in steel, then 12 months in new and used French oak, and comes out powerful but poised. Wine Enthusiast gave the 2017 94 points and a Best of the Year nod. Toro this polished at this price is a steal.
Baking spice, blackberry and black cherry with clove and orange zest. Dense, ripe fruit, durable round tannins, well-integrated acidity. Espresso bean and orange zest on the finish.
Roasted rack of lamb is the call. Braised short ribs or a charred ribeye off the grill work just as well.
Bodegas Elias Mora is Victoria Benavides' winery in Toro. Descarte comes from 40-year-old, north-oriented vineyards at 700 to 725 meters on sandy clay strewn with large stones, farmed practicing-organic and hand-harvested by an estate team.
