Ellen Redding Pinot Noir 2015 750ml
$47.00
Ellen Redding is Patrick McNeil's tiny Marin County label, named for his grandmother. Each vintage's label reproduces one of the hand-drawn envelopes his grandfather mailed her while courting her from 1925 to 1928. The 2015 comes from Chileno Valley Vineyard in the Petaluma Gap: Dijon clones, a third whole cluster, native fermentations, once-used and neutral French oak, 120 cases total. Prince of Pinot scored it 95 and wrote you would not find a better California Pinot at the price. We are not going to argue.
Blackberry, black raspberry, warm spice, vanilla and brioche on the nose. Velvety, mid-weight plus, with cola, dark chocolate and black tea wrapped around a sweet black-fruit core.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
Chileno Valley Vineyard is a windswept site six miles from the Pacific, farmed by Marin grape-growing pioneer Mark Pasternak. McNeil works only with small family-owned vineyards in Marin County and Napa Valley.
