Quinta do Encontro farms Baga in Bairrada, Atlantic-cooled country on Portugal's western edge, and this red splices that local grape with Merlot. The Baga brings the tight, juicy, firmly structured side. The Merlot rounds it out with richness and fruitcake depth. The 2021 is fresh, packed with red berries, with an herbal edge and a little wood spice, and it is ready now. A serious food red from a region most shoppers walk right past.

Baked cherry, plum skin, chocolate and dark spice on the nose. Round and creamy, medium to full bodied, juicy black currant and blackberry over a dry, firmly tannic core. Clean, structured finish.
