Escaladei - Black Slate - 2021

$30.99

Black Slate Escaladei is importer Eric Solomon's village-wine collaboration with La Conreria d'Scala Dei, in the Priorat village where Carthusian monks first planted vines. The 2021 is Garnacha with 3% Syrah from vines planted in 1978 and 2001, half fermented whole-cluster, raised in 3,000 and 5,000-liter Stockinger foudres. Wine Advocate gave it 92+ and called it pretty elegant. Real Priorat slate character without the usual Priorat price. Only 14,000 bottles made.

Bright ruby. Floral, lightly herbal Garnacha nose with black cherry, bramble, and damson plum. Medium body, very fine tannins, fresh focused fruit, and a long, dry, savory finish.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

La Conreria d'Scala Dei works the Escaladei village zone at the foot of the Montsant range, on the slate soils that named this cuvee. Soft vinification and big neutral Austrian foudres keep the Garnacha unvarnished. Bottled December 2022 at 13.94%.
