False Bay is the value label from Waterkloof in South Africa's Cape, and this is Pinotage for people who think they hate Pinotage. The fruit comes from a single vineyard of unirrigated bush vines in Stellenbosch, planted in 1996. Cellarmaster Nadia Langenegger ferments it spontaneously with wild yeast and raises it in big old foudres, nothing added but a touch of sulfur. The result leans more Pinot than Tage: lighter, fresher, and honestly elegant.

Black currant, mulberry and blueberry with plummy, savoury, smoky notes. Ripe and rich on the palate, vibrant black fruit, a sandy earthiness, ripe tannins and a spicy finish.

Braai food: boerewors, lamb chops, anything charred. Also barbecue ribs and mushroom dishes.
