Far Niente's stone winery went up in Oakville in 1885, sat abandoned through Prohibition, and was brought back to life by Gil Nickel in 1979. The estate has been a Napa benchmark ever since. This Cabernet blends fruit from Rutherford, Calistoga and St. Helena: 92 percent Cabernet Sauvignon rounded out with Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, aged 17 months in 65 percent new French oak. Polished, generous, immediately impressive. The steakhouse bottle that never lets you down.

Mixed berries, baking spice, dried lavender and thyme on the nose. Full palate of dark berry, black tea, toasted oak and spice over fine-grained tannins. Silky, long, lifted finish.

The 1885 gravity-flow winery was designed by Hamden McIntyre, and the first label is attributed to Winslow Homer, the founder's nephew. Under the Nickels, Far Niente dug the first new wine caves built in North America in nearly a century.
