First Drop was started in the Barossa in 2004 by two friends, John Retsas and Matt Gant, and it built its name on playful labels and serious winemaking. Mother's Milk Shiraz put them on the map. The Red One is their South Australia red blend, the everyday bottle in the range. Wine Enthusiast gave the 2020 eighty-seven points. Open it with a grill going and don't overthink it.

Charred, biscuity nose with brambly red and purple fruit, red licorice, pepper and oak spice. Grainy texture, juicy berry fruit, muscular tannins wound tight, a slightly bitter oaky finish.

Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.

First Drop works out of a Barossa winery they call Home of the Brave. Retsas and Gant started the label as friends. Gant had been winemaker at St Hallett and was named the inaugural Young Gun of Wine in 2007. The range now pulls fruit from Barossa, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills.
