Gaja - Rennina - Brunello - 2013
$190.00
When Angelo Gaja bought Pieve Santa Restituta in 1994, it was the family's first move outside Piedmont since 1859, and Rennina is what he came for: Sangiovese from three neighboring parcels around a fourth-century church where wine has been made since the 1100s. It ages about two years in oak, then six months in concrete before bottling. The 2013 is a classic, cooler vintage now sitting right in its drinking window. Brunello with a Barbaresco master's fingerprints on it.
Red currant, sour cherry and quince with juniper, laurel and sweet tobacco. Smooth, juicy texture and round, integrated tannins with bright freshness. Opens toward black cherry, spice and cedar with air.
Classic matches for a red like this: Grilled and roasted meats, hearty pastas, aged cheeses.
The estate is named for the ancient pieve, or parish church, at its center, with foundations from the fourth century AD. Rennina's lime-rich soils and southwest exposure catch western breezes; the name traces to the estate's late-Roman title, Fundus Rescianum.
