Fidelity is Nick Goldschmidt's Merlot-led Bordeaux blend from his Crazy Creek Estate in Alexander Valley. The 2022 runs 76 percent Merlot with 12 percent Cabernet Sauvignon plus Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, aged 12 months in French oak, 15 percent new. Goldschmidt is a New Zealand-born winemaker who has been at this since 1982, and Fidelity is his value play: single-estate fruit, real structure, thirty dollars. A weeknight steak wine that thinks it costs more.

Dark garnet. Black cherry, blueberry, and plum aromas. Strawberry and cherry on the palate with black pepper and cinnamon, supple tannins, restrained oak, an even, warm finish.

Smash burgers, braised short ribs, a Tuesday ribeye.

Crazy Creek Estate sits in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County; the 2022 cropped at 4.1 tons per acre and finished at 14.3 percent alcohol. Nick and Yolyn Goldschmidt built the family label around single-vineyard Sonoma bottlings.
