Herdade Grande - Classico Red Blend - 2019
$24.99
Herdade Grande is the Lança family homestead in Vidigueira, southern Alentejo, where clay soils over schist grow big, generous reds. The Clássico blends Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Touriga Nacional and Trincadeira. Half the wine spends nine months in French oak barrels; the rest stays in tank so the fruit stays loud. Rich, round and mouth-coating, the kind of sun-soaked Portuguese red that makes similarly priced Napa look silly. This is the winter-dinner bottle. Full stop.
Spice, earth and tobacco over black cherry, cassis and blueberry jam. Rich and rounded, mouth-coating dark fruit shifting to brighter red berries, caramel and sweet oak accents, firm classic tannin, spicy finish.
Seared Alentejo-style pork or beef, lamb stew, salt cod, or a board of cured sausage and cheese.
Vidigueira sits in Alentejo under a Mediterranean climate with continental influence, on clay soils of schist origin. Fermentation runs temperature-controlled in stainless steel, then 50 percent of the blend ages nine months in French oak. Around 14.5 percent alcohol.
