Jean-Paul Paquet farms in the Maconnais village of Fuisse, and Les Vieux Murs is his Pouilly-Fuisse bottling, 100% Chardonnay. The 2021 shows the classic Fuisse combination of cream, oaky citrus and baked apple, with real weight and power on the palate for the price. This is Burgundy's white-wine bargain region: same grape as Puligny and Meursault, a fraction of the cost, made by a producer who has been doing it quietly and well for generations.

Cream, oak-toned citrus, apple and peach on the nose. Powerful, full palate with real weight for the price, chalky Maconnais minerality on the finish.

Good with pasta and sausage, goat cheese quiche, or roast basque-style chicken.
