Licanten - Malbec - 2021
$34.00
Licantén is the coastal frontier of Chile's Curicó Valley, an official DO only since 2018, and La Roncière's Idahue Estate is still its only winery. The Orueta family has made wine since 1949; they bought this land in 2014 chasing cooler weather, and the Pacific sits 25 kilometers away. The 2021 is 85 percent Malbec grown on granite with dashes of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, aged nearly a year in French oak. Jancis Robinson called it the best value of 85 Chilean wines she tasted.
Complex yet approachable. Dry, dusty tannins, a light leafiness, and cool-climate freshness that hides its 14 percent alcohol. About 30 percent new French oak frames it quietly. Clean, fresh finish.
Grilled flank steak, pork chops with charred peppers, beef empanadas, or a wedge of hard sheep cheese.
Idahue Estate covers 200 hectares of wildly varied soils, including llicorella schist like Priorat's, planted only to red varieties across 140 small plots. The Malbec is part old massal-selection vines propagated from Curicó, part Cot clone 180, and the estate is certified under the Wines of Chile Sustainability Code.
