Marcarini - Barolo Brunate - 2016
$70.00
Old-school Barolo from a cru with seven centuries of pedigree. Marcarini works out of an eighteenth-century cellar in the hilltop village of La Morra and farms 4.5 hectares of Brunate, the vineyard many call La Morra's grand cru. The method is traditional: long submerged-cap maceration, then at least two years in big old Slavonian casks. The 2016 vintage is one of the great modern Barolo years. Roses, tobacco and cherry, built for the decade ahead. Around 9,500 bottles a year.
Rose, blue flower, woodland berry, menthol and pipe tobacco aromas. Full-bodied and youthfully austere, Morello cherry, licorice and wild mint over dense grainy tannin. Long, earthy finish. Cellar or decant hard.
Braised beef is the classic move. Game and aged alpine cheeses stand up to the tannin too.
Marcarini's Brunate parcels face south on calcareous clay rich in magnesium at about 300 meters, vines planted in 1978 and 1987. Fermentation in steel and concrete, up to 45 days on the skins, then 24 months in 22 to 45 hectoliter Slavonian oak.
