Marcarini - Barolo Brunate - 2017
$109.00
Brunate has ranked among Barolo's great crus for seven hundred years, and Marcarini tends it from cellars in the heart of La Morra, in a building dating to the 1700s. The 2017 is 100% Nebbiolo, macerated under a submerged cap for up to 45 days, then aged 24 months in big old Slavonian oak casks. About 9,500 bottles a year. The warm vintage made this one approachable early. Traditional Barolo you do not have to wait a decade for.
Roses, licorice, new leather and crushed blue flowers, then dried cherry, raspberry compote, tobacco, truffle and white pepper. Warm and velvety, with polished tannins and a long, intense finish.
Braised beef, game and aged cheese. Brasato al Barolo if you are feeling ambitious.
Marcarini's 4.5 hectares of Brunate face south and southwest on calcareous clay rich in magnesium at about 300 meters, planted in 1978 and 1987. Fermentation in steel and concrete, then 24 months in 22 to 45 hectoliter Slavonian oak.
