Blackboard is the second label from Matthews, the Woodinville, Washington winery, made from Columbia Valley fruit. The 2020 blends 63 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with 34 percent Merlot and 3 percent Petit Verdot at 14.5 percent alcohol, and James Suckling gave it 91 points. The value math is simple: supple tannins, real density, and a level of polish Napa charges twice as much for. Columbia Valley's warm days and cold nights ripen the fruit and save the acid. Mulberry, blueberry, black currant, and violet with chocolate and vanilla bean spice. Medium to full bodied, red cherry and plum over coffee-ground depth, supple tannins, savory herbs on the finish.
