Maurodos - Prima - Toro - 2014 - 1.5L

$48.99

Prima is the entry point into Bodegas San Roman, the Toro estate that Mariano Garcia, Vega Sicilia's longtime winemaker, founded under the Maurodos name in 1997. This is the 2014 in magnum: mostly Tinta de Toro with about 10% Garnacha and a splash of white Malvasia, raised in used barriques and oak vats to keep the fruit out front. 2014 was a cool, balanced year, so it drinks fresher than Toro's reputation suggests. A twelve-year-old magnum of serious Spanish red under fifty bucks is the best party math in the shop.

Blackberry and cassis with licorice, toasted spice and a hot-stone mineral streak. Full-bodied but fresh for Toro, with grape-skin grip and a warm, persistent finish.

Grilled lamb chops, brisket off the smoker, aged Manchego. It is a magnum. Invite people.

Mariano Garcia built Maurodos, now Bodegas San Roman, in the village of San Roman de Hornija in Toro. Prima is the estate's earlier-drinking label alongside the flagship San Roman; roughly 200,000 bottles were made in 2014.
