Michele Chiarlo - Langhe - Nebbiolo - 2020
$34.00
Michele Chiarlo's Il Principe is Langhe Nebbiolo built from serious dirt: vineyards in Barbaresco itself plus the sandy hills of Vezza d'Alba in the Roero. Hand-harvested fruit, ten days on the skins, then a minimum of twelve months split between steel, wood, and bottle. The 2020 lands at 14 percent with silky tannins and none of the Barolo invoice. This is the smart way into Nebbiolo. Weeknight friendly, company worthy.
Medium garnet with bright reflections. Small black fruits, plum, and violet on the nose. Ample and balanced on the palate, silky tannins, a long, pleasing finish.
Mushroom risotto, tajarin with butter and sage, braised short ribs, or a board of salumi.
Fruit comes from two soils: Barbaresco's bluish-grey calcareous clay marl, rich in manganese and potassium, and the loose sand of Vezza d'Alba in Roero. Stainless steel fermentation, ten days of maceration, malolactic, then at least twelve months across steel, wood, and bottle.
