Monbrison Haut Medoc 750ml
$34.99
Château Monbrison is a cru bourgeois in Arsac, squarely inside the Margaux appellation. Laurent Vonderheyden, a descendant of the American Davies family that bought the estate in 1921, runs it today. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the vineyard on sand and gravel soils, and the wine spends about 18 months in 40 to 50 percent new French oak. The 2014 blends 72 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with 28 percent Merlot. Genuine Margaux in the mid thirties barely exists. This is it.
Bright cherry and blackcurrant with cedar, tobacco leaf, and spice. Medium bodied and fresh, delicate rather than rich, with firm dry structure. Give it an hour in a decanter.
Lamb chops with herbs, duck breast, a proper roast chicken. Pulls double duty with hard cheeses.
The Margaux vineyard covers 15.5 hectares at Arsac, planted to 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot on sand and gravel. Vines average about 40 years, with parcels from the 1963 replanting. Stainless steel vinification, parcel by parcel since the 2012 cellar renovation.
